Ek Tara is a registered Trust working towards facilitating the integration of urban marginalized communities focused on the girl child through education and comprehensive development. We work in the fields of education, health-hygiene-nutrition and vocational training for children and women in eastern India’s slum communities. We offer multi-pronged programmes which aim at holistic development of our beneficiaries. Currently we have over 1000 children in our community centre at Topsia located in Kolkata, India.
The pillar of Ek Tara’s intervention is providing quality English medium education, which is non-existent in institutions within the area. We have equally robust Nutrition and Health projects involving not only the children, but also parents to discourage drop out and absenteeism. Keeping up with the times, Ek Tara has added Digital and other Technological Learning Aids and a whole range of Extracurricular Activities for the children. We are always cognizant of the physical and mental health of our children, and individual interests and work to provide opportunities to nurture and hone inherent qualities and talent.
During the pandemic Ek Tara also started providing relief material to the children and their families as most of them were rendered jobless at the time of the lockdown. Starting from providing food relief and other items of hygiene and sanitation, we continued to keep our children academically engaged through the lockdown period by providing digital and tele-learning project based education tools. From September 2020, Ek Tara will start operating from its new state-of -the - art learning centre which in the subsequent years will reach out to over 2000 children through pre-primary to higher education.
