Activities should be adapted based on the learner's cognitive ability.

Purpose

Literacy activities are important for learners so that they are able to effectively read and write. Learners need literacy in order to not only be understood by others, but also to comprehend the world around them.

Activity 9: Movie in my Mind

Ask the learner to read a story alone or with a partner. Pick a part of the story or the entire story and draw what they saw happen in the story.

Purpose

This activity helps learners visualize what they are reading so that they get a deeper understanding of the story.

  • Step 1

    Think of a story to tell the learner. While the story is being told, tell the learner to try to visualize what is happening. Ask the learner to try to make a ‘movie in your mind’ as the story is being read!

  • Step 2

    Next, ask the learner to choose a part of the story they wish to illustrate. They can pick to draw a section of the story or draw the entire story.

  • Step 3

    Finally, ask the learner to draw what they visualized or saw happening in the story in order.

  • Step 4

    Discuss with the learner if the ‘movie in your mind’ helped them fill in anything missing from the book. If so, how?

  • Fun Twist

    If this is a story from a book, cover the pictures in the book before reading it and then ask the learner to compare their ‘movie’ with the author’s!

  • Additional Exercise

    Using the learner’s drawings of the story, ask them to write a short script. Once this is finished, act out the story alone or with a partner. They can make costumes, include props and even make a backdrop!

Activity 10: Story Sack

Using a plastic or cloth bag, ask the learners to create a story based on the props in the bag.

Purpose

Ask the learner to pick out 2 objects from the bag and think of how they can be related.

  • Step 1

    Fill a plastic or cloth bag with various different items from around the house that the learner can use to create a story with.

  • Step 2

    Ask the learner to pick out 2 objects from the bag and think of how they can be related.

  • Step 3

    Finally, ask the learner to create a story based on those two objects.

  • Additional Exercise

    Ask the learner to pick out 3+ objects and do the same activity.
